This is the photo the Hinchliffe family will cherish for life.

Capturing three generations, it is one of the last happy snaps of Bob Hinchliffe, taken with his son Kane soon after the birth of his first grandson Cameron last year.

The electrician was tragically killed when the
Lancair Legacy 2000 plane he was traveling in crashed on takeoff from Shepparton Aerodrome about 2.20pm yesterday.

Friend and pilot John Pendergast, 59, also died in the tragedy.

Mr Hinchliffe's son Kane yesterday fought to hold back tears as he remembered his "happy go lucky" father who had a love for flying.

He said his dad was generous and always first to put his hand up to help someone in need.

"He helped me so much," he said. "I'll just miss him so much."

Mr Hinchliffe and Mr Pendergast were only planning to do a short flight to nearby Yarrawonga when trouble struck and the plane plunged to the ground beside the Goulburn Valley Highway.

The pair died on impact.

Mr Pendergast's family were last night battling to come to terms with their loss.

"We're all stunned about the whole situation at the moment," his mother Eileen told the Sunday Herald Sun.

She described her son as a skilled businessman who was easy to like and loved to fly.

"He was such a clever boy. He'll be sadly missed," she said.

The father-of-three only last week returned from a five-week holiday in Europe with his wife Mary, where they visited their London-based son.

He has more than 25 years flying experience.

No clear cause has yet been established for the aircraft mishap.

A team of four Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators were tonight at the scene.

ATSB senior investigator Neil Campbell said they would look at the wreckage, ground impact marks, witness statements and any weather factors.

Mr Campbell said maintenance records and the pilot's background and training would also be scrutinized.
