Crews extinguish fire mistakenly reported as plane crash: Man’s airplane hobby goes up in smoke -- Jefferson Parish, Louisiana

Ultralight planes under construction go up in flames inside a Jefferson garage.

Fire Director Joe Greco says inside the garage were the makings of light weight one passenger motorized airplanes, “They had one complete plane and they were working on a couple of other ones. It was a total loss, the entire building.”

It took Jefferson Parish firefighters about a half hour to put out the fire.

The call for a two alarm fire on Central Avenue mistakenly came in at first that a plane had plunged from the sky, “Got the story twisted around from planes being stored or built there to a plane crash. Come to find out it was one of those ultralight planes that they would construct inside.”

Greco says extra man power was called in because of the heat.

He says even though tanks of gas in the garage may have fueled flames, the cause is still under investigation.

There were no injuries.
