Ribbon-cutting for renovated airport is today

WEST DOVER, Vt., July 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A private airport in the southern Vermont town of Dover is being revamped – and renamed – to attract more visitation to the Deerfield Valley area. The former Mount Snow Airport, renamed the Deerfield Valley Airport (DVA), will be improved to attract single and twin-engine general aviation aircraft.

An official opening for the public is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 20. There will be a variety of aircraft on display.

While the new facility (airport code 4V8) will target private aircraft, the public may charter flights as needed, according to owner Jim Barnes, founder and president of the Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain, who purchased the airport in June.

The runway and taxiway have been completely resurfaced, and renovations, including a new outside patio, will be made to the terminal building and five existing hangars. Future plans call for extending the existing 2,650-ft. runway to accommodate small jets.

DVA lies at an elevation of 1,950 feet and is about one mile southwest from West Dover. The airport, bordered by the 18-hole Mount Snow Golf Course, is located on a connector trail to the VAST snowmobile trail system.

The Haystack Ski Area is now part of an exclusive, members-only establishment called The Hermitage Club at Haystack Mountain, Vermont's only private mountain club. Membership has grown to nearly 200 families and the improved airport is expected to increase that number and encourage real estate sales throughout Deerfield Valley.

"The whole region wins with this renovation of the over 40-year-old  airport," said Barnes. "DVA will become its own economic engine bringing customers to fly in for skiing, shopping, golf, and restaurants. It will attract second-home purchases as well, improving the value of existing property."

Barnes adds, "Local fire and rescue operations will now have a maintained, safe landing zone for medevac helicopters."

Special events, such as air shows, fly-ins, and festivals, are also a possibility once the renovation is complete.

The Hermitage Inn is an elegant four-star country inn, complete with its own covered bridge, fine dining restaurant, upscale pub, art collection and nationally renowned wine cellar. It offers over 12 miles hiking and cross-country ski trail, mountain biking, snow tubing, snowmobiling, ice- skating and fly- fishing.
