Paperwork error leads officials on chase for non-existent plane: North Texas Regional Airport (KGYI), Sherman/Denison, Texas

DURANT, OK -- Emergency crews in Bryan County prepared for the worst Friday morning, as they called all hands on deck to search for a missing plane.

But it turns out it was all a mix-up.

The Federal Aviation Administration called Bryan County emergency services around 9:30 a.m. asking for help after they lost contact with a plane.

But that plane didn't actually exist.

A Cessna 152 student plane with U.S. Aviation out of North Texas Regional Airport left for a training mission Friday morning. But a paperwork error listed the wrong tail number in the flight plan.

The error caused the Fort Worth Traffic Control Center to issue an alert for a missing plane.

Officials cleared up the error and called off search crews just after 11 a.m.

But emergency crews spent almost two hours this morning scouring a 50 mile radius.

"And we were pretty much traveling all the roads to see if there were some sort of identification that a plane may have gone down in that area," said OHP Trooper B.J. Keeling.

The real plane landed safe and sound at the North Texas Regional Airport late Friday morning.
