When flying Ford Airport avoid 28th St.: Traffic could cause travelers to miss flights

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Starting Thursday and going through Sunday will mark the busiest time of year at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

Deputy Executive Director of Ford Airport Phil Johnson said the airport expects upwards of 7,000 passengers to go through the facility each day Thursday through Sunday.

That represents about a 10 to 15% increase in their average daily traffic.

The new construction along 28th Street has Johnson urging and warning travelers to bypass the 28th Street exit and use exit #44, 36th Street to get to the airport.

Not only will travelers run into lines and congestion along 28th Street but at the airport as well.

According to the airport, long lines are expected at ticket counters, security checkpoints, and gate service counters.

Johnson suggests travelers arrive to the airport at least 90 minutes prior to departure time if you don't have to check baggage and have checked in online.

Passengers who need to visit the check-in counter and need to check baggage should plan to arrive to the airport two hours prior to departure.

Suggestions for making it through TSA security checkpoints faster include being mindful that "over-packed" bag. They typically slow down security screening and increase wait times for everyone.

For a list of prohibited items travelers should visit TSA's website.

Gerald R. Ford International Airport is also holding Passenger Appreciation Days starting Thursday and continuing through Sunday.

Travelers can visit the airport's Grand Hall for free refreshments, giveaways, prize drawings, contests and more.
