Homemade plane takes flight

It was many years in the making, but perseverance and hard work has paid off for Leeton resident Warren Kirkup who has flown an plane that he made in his back shed.

Mr Kirkup worked on manufacturing the aircraft for more than five years and finally took it to the skies last Sunday.

After some slight tinkering with the engine, Mr Kirkup was hoping to take it up again over the weekend.

“It flew beautifully,” he said.

“It’s very satisfying after all these years to finally get up flying.

“When you start projects like this, whether its model cars or anything like that, they often don’t end up finished. I’m very glad I stuck with this one.”

Mr Kirkup now needs to complete 25 hours of flying, no further than 30 nautical miles from base at Brobenah Aerodrome.

Following that, he will be able to take it wherever he likes and estimates it can fly at 200km/h and cover 600km before needing to be fueled-up.
