Four pages of a to-do list for Leesburg International Airport (KLEE), Florida

The city of Leesburg’s Airport Advisory Committee sprang to life recently in a bid to get some things done that tenants have long wanted and to change the direction of the airport.

Last week, the committee submitted a report to city commissioners, and at the top of the list is a demand that longtime airport manager Charlie Weller resign. Interestingly, the committee is recommending that Weller, 78, be replaced by a part-time rather than a full-time administrator. Weller has long been a controversial figure at the airport.

The committee has a set a date for later this month to begin negotiating with Leesburg officials to make some changes in how leases are awarded and to set clear guidelines for the cost per square foot. The city owns all the buildings on the airport and leases them to the business owners.

Among other projects, the committee said it wants:

  • To build a seaplane ramp and boat park, making Leesburg International the only seaplane repair facility in Florida.
  • Get a ramp built for pilots to taxi to the Cracker Barrel restaurant
  • Stop fencing projects that make the airport even less accessible for the average person.
  • Repair various equipment that is broken and ignored
  • Increase community awareness by sponsoring events, fly-ins and “themed” activities.

City officials have pledged to do as much as possible now that its advisory board has stepped up.
