Route 8 closed briefly yesterday for plane move: Chesapeake Sport Pilot at Bay Bridge Airport (W29) Stevensville, Maryland. (Bay Bridge Marina Boat Show)

STEVENSVILLE - State Route 8 was closed briefly yesterday morning as an amphibious seaplane taxied from the airport to the marina for an upcoming boat show.

Route 8 between the Bay Bridge Airport and Pier One Road was closed about 11 a.m. as the plane taxied to Bay Bridge Marina for the Bay Bridge Boat Show set for today through Sunday at the Bay Bridge Marina. The aircraft belongs to Chesapeake Sport Pilot.

While the Bay Bridge Boat Show always showcases the newest and hottest boats on the market, this is the first year that the show has featured a flying boat. Boat show organizers were excited about the new addition to the show.

"We are looking forward to a really interesting and exciting show this weekend," said Paul Jacobs, general manager of United States Yacht Shows Inc. "We have many special features including the SeaRey. It will be interesting to see. I can't wait!"

The latest model of SeaRey, the LSX, is a light sport airplane and can be flown by a sport or private pilot without an FAA medical certificate. It is designed for recreation and fun and handles much like a small power boat on the water. Training is available at Chesapeake Sport Pilot to teach any boater how to fly it.

"This is an extension of our business philosophy," said Tim Adelman,co-owner of Chesapeake Sport Pilot, "flying (and boating) is fun!"

On Wednesday April 18th at approximately 11am Route 8 will experience a short closure between the Bay Bridge Airport and Pier One Road for an unusual occurrence, an amphibious seaplane taxiing from the airport to the marina in preparation for the upcoming Bay Bridge Boat show scheduled April 19th-22nd at the Bay Bridge Marina. The aircraft belongs to Chesapeake Sport Pilot, the largest light sport flight center in the country, and the Mid-Atlantic dealer for Searey aircraft.

The Searey is a two place, amphibious flying boat produced by Florida based company Progressive Aerodyne for 20 years. It is one of the most popular amphibious aircraft in the country with nearly 300 flying in the US and over 500 sold world wide. It features phenomenally responsive water handling, and can taxi up out of the water onto a beach, boat ramp, or waterfront homeowner’s back yard or land at traditional airports.
