CAPE TOWN - A hang glider reported to have crashed into the sea at Logies Bay in Cape Town on Tuesday afternoon turned out be nothing more than a lost Mickey Mouse balloon. NSRI Hout Bay station commander Brad Geyser said a crew of sea rescuers were sent out at 1.47pm after a witness reported seeing a hang glider plunging into the at Logies Bay, Llandudno. "Our NSRI volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Albie Matthew and responded while a Hout Bay volunteer, EMS paramedic Mark Muller, and an NSRI Hout Bay volunteer, crewman Shaun Thomas, responded to the scene by road," Geyser said.
"The witness, a Llandudno resident, reported seeing the hang glider parachute plummeting into the sea and also reported seeing what appeared to be the hang-glider survivor slowly swimming ashore. He then confirmed that it appeared that the hang-glider survivor was now lying motionless on the rocks." At the scene Muller and Thomas, after negotiating "some barely accessible terrain", discovered a large Mickey Mouse party balloon on the rocks. "It has been confirmed that this was a case of mistaken identity and we suspect that the afternoon sun silhouetted against the balloon may have given the shape, the impression, of being a hang glider to the witness," Geyser said.
The operation was filed as a "False Alarm with Good Intentions".
