DENVER – Passengers on board a United Express flight heading for Toronto from Denver had a scare in the air.

The flight with 68 passengers left Denver International Airport at 10:49 a.m. Wednesday. Some passengers heard a “pop” three minutes into the flight, and the plane returned to Denver.

Pictures taken by startled passengers show them looking toward the front of the airplane after the pilot declared an emergency.

“We heard a little sound, and then it smelled like somebody lit a match,” one passenger told FOX31 Denver reporter Justin Joseph.

“We had this smoky smell and then it kind of went away,” says another passenger, Bonita Hubbard. “Then they said we shouldn’t worry, that everything was under control and we were going back to the airport.”

As fire trucks waited, the plane landed back at DIA without incident.

Firefighters immediately boarded the plane and went straight to the cockpit.

A United Airlines spokesman says an air conditioning unit failed, filling parts of the plane with smoke.

The emergency was called as a precaution.

“It was scary, but it’s good because they fixed it now,” a passenger says.

The passengers got back on the plane three hours later, and it took off for Toronto once again. They made it to their destination without further incident Wednesday night.
