Commissioners to reopen privatization process. Gwinnett County Airport-Briscoe Field (KLZU), Lawrenceville, Georgia

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett's airport privatization will begin anew.

Commissioners are expected to reject qualifications submitted by three companies last year in the process to consider selling or leasing Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville.

After several setbacks -- including a delay until after the election of a new chairman for the government -- consultants recommended opening the proposal process to more companies.

The new process proposed by Infrastructure Management Group would put the controversy over commercial flights in the back seat, calling for companies to submit plans to continue the airport's general aviation operations. Proposals would include a section for a "long-term vision" for the field that could then entail commercial flights.

In addition to rejecting the previously submitted qualifications packages, Tuesday's agenda includes a change order giving IMG more than $42,000 for continuing to help Gwinnett with the process.

Commissioners could also pick members for a citizen advisory board promised to help provide input on the controversial topic.
