The two major commercial runways at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are scheduled re-open early Monday morning, officials said Sunday.
The two runways have been closed since Friday night for a 54-hour repavement project that's scheduled to end at 5 a.m. Monday, said spokesman Jonathan Dean. The closings are the first of its kind in more than two decades.
Over the weekend, Dean said there have been "intermittent" flight delays.
Travelers should expect some more delays until Monday morning. No particular airlines are affected. All travelers are advised to check with their airlines for flight delay information, Dean said.
On Sunday, Dean said the project was on track to end as scheduled.
The two runways, which are 10,500 and 9,500 feet long, had to be closed to repave the intersection where they meet, Dean said. BWI has four runways: two for commercial traffic, one for general aviation and one that's hardly used, known as 4-22. Commercial flights have been using 4-22 for the duration of the re-pavement project.
That runway has approach and departure paths over areas to the to the northeast of Aviation Boulevard and southwest of MD 100 (Arundel Mills and Severn areas).
