Emergency responders from the Portage County Sheriff's Department and the Metro Fire Department look over a light-sport category experimental plane that went down Thursday morning in a potato field east of Stevens Point after a propeller blade fell off. Both Bret Taplin, the student pilot, and John Thompson, the instructor who landed the plane, were examined by emergency personnel at the scene and released.

STOCKTON -- Two Stevens Point men escaped with only minor injuries Thursday when an aircraft they were flying malfunctioned and crashed in a Stockton potato field.

John Thompson, 67, and Bret Taplin, 57, suffered a few cuts and bruises in the crash, but both walked away from the scene.

The two took off just before 10:30 a.m. from the Stevens Point Municipal Airport in a light-sport category experimental plane, Taplin said. Taplin, a student pilot, said he built the plane and Thompson is his flight instructor.

After a short time in flight, the plane started to vibrate and a piece of the propeller fell off, Taplin said. Thompson took over flying the plane, and he was able to land it in a field between Highway 10 and old Highway 18, east of Stockton Road. The plane overturned when it hit the ground.
