National Cadet Corps cadets fly high, eye Indian Air Force

GUWAHATI: NCC cadets in Guwahati are now aiming for the Indian Air Force stars, flying high after a tryst in the clouds with a training programme by the 50 Assam Air Squadron.

Select National Cadet Corps (NCC) are thrilled after flying micro light zen air crafts in the programme which started on Sunday. Vivek Saha, a B.Sc second year student from Pandu College in Guwahati, who is yet to succeed in the National Defence Academy entrance examination, emerged a confident aspirant of the Indian Air Force after the stint in the skies.

"I joined the NCC two months ago. It was my dream to fly in the air and I am grateful to the NCC for providing the students of our college with the flying experience. It was just like a dream coming true when I gazed down to the earth through the glasses of our aircraft," said Saha, adding the training session motivated him to try hard to earn the position of a pilot with the Air Force.

Another trainee, Nisha Baishya, who is from a commerce background, felt sad though that she cannot become an air force pilot since she is not from a science background.

"I would like to be associated with the Indian Air Force. Though I would not be able to become an air pilot, I will still be satisfied if I get any other job in the air force," said Nisha, a Class XII student from SBOA public school in Guwahati.

She appealed to every student to join the NCC, vouching for the unparalleled experience of firing and flying it provides to school and college students.

Chief guest of the programme, brigadier B S Sambyal, who flew at the Air Force Station at Borjhar, along with commanding officer of the 50 Assam Air Squadron, Pankaj Chopra, said the NCC especially wants rural students to come forward and join the organization, beating all barriers.

"NCC camps help students to develop sound personalities. We hope after their experience in the air more students will come forward to join the NCC. Though we have only two micro light air crafts among the five air squadrons of the NCC in the Northeast, soon one more micro light air craft will be given to the air squadron in Mizoram," said Sambyal, who is also the deputy director general of the NCC in the Northeast.

The 50 Assam Air Squadron is the only NCC squadron in the Northeast to have aircrafts to train its cadets.
