Two men who lived for planes died Saturday afternoon when their historic aircraft tumbled from the sky. One man on the ground witnessed it all.

Lorenzo Cutillo was catching catfish on the Des Moines river on Saturday afternoon. He was in the same spot he always is, when he heard a plane.

"When it started to get closer it just rammed in to the wires, it flipped like three times with the wire," Cutillo said in Spanish while his wife translated.

Cutillo saw this restored WWII aircraft tumble across the water onto the other bank. He was sitting just ten feet away.

"He was really not thinking of anything, he didn't know which way to go he kept going back and forth trying to figure out what to do," said Cutillo's wife translating for him.

Cutillo then ran for help at the nearest house. But it took rescue crews about 20 minutes to get there. The plane crashed in Dallas County near Zook Spur road and the scene was only accessible by boat or helicopter.

"He says if he would have seen somebody, then he would have swam across to help," Cutillo's wife translated.

The plane had a home in the Aviation Heritage Museum in Ankeny. A friend of the men who died says they had been members of the organization for over 20 years, and they had a passion for keeping history alive.

The men's names have not yet been released. But their friend said they were flying back from Airport Appreciation day in Boone, on their way to Ankeny. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.

Two people died after their WWII vintage airplane crashed near the Des Moines River Saturday afternoon.

Upon impact, the plane broke apart on a sand bank in a remote area only reachable by boat or helicopter.

One witness at the scene said the plane may have hit some power lines and then nosedived into sand.

The plane had been at an air show in Boone.

As of Saturday night, the names of the crash victims have not been released and the FAA is investigating.
