On July 17, 2022, about 0810 Pacific daylight time, an Evolution Revolt weight shift control (WSC) light sport airplane, commonly referred to as a “Trike,” N258MH, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Walter Springs, California. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

According to a family member, the pilot and passenger departed from Yolo County Airport (DWA), Davis, California, the morning of the accident. The pilot then performed a touch and go landing at Angwin Airport-Parrett Field (2O3), Angwin, California, and departed to the south to the area near the accident site. The family member added that he flew a similar flight with the pilot the week prior
without any problems and that they maintained a cruise altitude of about 1,500 ft above ground level during the flight.

Nearby residences reported a power outage about 0810 the morning of the accident. There were no witnesses to the accident sequence.

An examination of the accident site revealed that the airplane came to rest in a wooded valley at an elevation of 660 ft mean sea level (msl). A small fire ensued consuming some of the wreckage. Two hills adjacent to the accident site had a single power pole at each of their summits that supported three transmission lines between them. The transmission lines were severed, and the trike wreckage was
located about 310 ft north of the downed lines.

The wreckage was relocated to a secured facility for further examination.

Authorities have identified two Placer County residents who died aboard a small airplane that crashed in rural Napa County earlier this week.

Scott Killian, a 61-year-old Roseville resident, was piloting the plane when it went down near Pope Valley at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, the Napa County Coroner’s Office announced Thursday. Killian died at the scene along with his passenger, 22-year-old Dreyson Hicks of Rocklin.

The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Earlier, a NTSB spokesperson said the victims were aboard an Evolution Revolt Weight Shift Control Trike when it struck a power line while maneuvering. It was not immediately known where the plane had taken off or was intended to land.

The resulting crash started a vegetation fire that spread to more than an acre and took about two hours for Cal Fire crews to extinguish.

A website for Florida-based Evolution Aircraft Inc. describes the Revolt as a small, propeller-driven aircraft with two seats mounted front to back, a roll cage instead of bodywork, and a design geared for short takeoffs and landings at slow speeds no higher than 90 mph.

The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report within three weeks of the crash, though a full investigation may last as long as two years.

Federal air safety authorities will investigate the crash of a small, lightweight airplane Sunday morning in rural Napa County, in which two people died.

Peter Knudson, spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board, confirmed the agency, along with the Federal Aviation Administration, will probe the fatal crash that occurred at about 8:30 a.m. near Berryessa Estates. The wreck also triggered a vegetation fire that spread to more than an acre before being extinguished about two hours later, according to Cal Fire.

The plane, an Evolution Revolt Weight Shift Control Trike, struck power lines while maneuvering, Knudson said Monday. It was not immediately known where the aircraft had taken off or was scheduled to land.

A preliminary report on the facts and circumstances of the crash is expected in two to three weeks, with a full investigation possibly lasting one to two years, according to Knudson.

Henry Wofford, spokesperson for the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed two deaths resulting from the crash. The victims’ names had not been released as of Monday afternoon, pending notification of relatives.

Remains of the plane were found within the perimeter of a vegetation fire that was reported to Cal Fire at about 8:30 a.m., according to spokesman Tyree Zander of the firefighting agency’s Sonoma-Lake-Napa unit. The flames spread to 1 to 2 acres before Cal Fire and Napa County Fire crews contained the fire by 10:27 a.m., authorities said.

A website for Evolution Aircraft Inc. of Zephyrhills, Florida, advertises the Revolt, an aircraft with a propeller engine, two seats mounted front to back, and a roll cage instead of conventional body panels. The machine is designed for “low and slow” flight and short takeoffs and landings, with a top speed of 90 mph, according to the site.
