Beechcraft K35 Bonanza, N899RW: Accident occurred October 28, 2021 near Hammond Northshore Regional Airport (KHDC), Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana

On October 28, 2021, about 1626 central daylight time, a Beech K35, N899RW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Hammond, Louisiana. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot reported that the airplane was on approach to the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport (HDC), Hammond, Louisiana. Shortly after being cleared to land on runway 31, smoke filled the cockpit and the oil pressure gauge indicated zero. Unable to make the runway, the pilot declared an emergency and made a left turn toward the westbound lanes of a nearby interstate. The airplane touched down in between traffic and the right wing struck a truck. The airplane swerved right then left and exited the interstate pavement. The airplane came to rest came to rest nose down against the median fence. The right wing sustained substantial damage.

During airplane recovery, a heavy coating of oil was observed on the airplane’s belly and some oil was noted on the right-side engine cowling and fuselage.

    1. Somebody forgot to tighten and safety wire the oil filter.

    2. Forums have reported that the oil filter backed off, but unclear whether the adapter AD had to be performed on this airplane. Sure would be sad if distraction while performing the AD contributed to an error/missed step that took down the Bo.

      Found a safety wire incorrectly strung in reverse pull on a propulsion system of a rocket once. The highly disciplined mechanic and inspector team that correctly performed such work hundreds of times missed recognizing that backwards installation, readily apparent to fresh eyes. Mistakes can happen anytime.
