ELKINS, Arkansas — A small plane landed on a stretch of Highway 16 near Elkins Wednesday night (February 26th).

According to eyewitnesses, the plane ran out of fuel before making an emergency landing. No injuries have been reported.

The pilot tells 5NEWS he knew he was running low on fuel, saw a clear space, and performed an emergency landing. 

Elkins police department and fire department were able to get fuel to the pilot and shut down a portion of the highway. The pilot then used Highway 16 as a runway and took off.

Police said the plane was headed to a Springdale airport before it came down. 

Eyewitnesses said they saw the plane losing speed and height rapidly. 

The plane was a Cessna 172. The pilot tells 5NEWS he was a little embarrassed about the incident, but is thankful everything turned out okay.
