FRESNO, California (KSEE/KGPE) — New video shows the arrest of the 17-year-old who police say stole a private plane at Fresno Yosemite International Airport before crashing it into a nearby building.

The plane crashed into the Signature TECHNICAir Aircraft Maintenance building near Shields and Winery avenues.

Around 7:30 a.m., the 17-year-old breached an airport fence and entered a King Air 200 propeller-driven aircraft and was able to start one engine, airport officials reported.

The incident occurred in the General Aviation area of the airport.

“The aircraft then began to move and pivot and crashed into a building and a fence on airport property,” airport officials said. “The aircraft never became airborne, and there was no fire. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. No injuries occurred in this incident.”

No passengers or commercial airlines were ever at risk in this incident, airport officials said.

Airport and Fresno police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of the aircraft theft and crash.

Fresno officers arrived first and contacted the teen, who was seated in the pilot’s seat and wearing the pilot headset. She appeared to be disoriented and was uncooperative when she was taken into custody for theft of an aircraft.

The female will be booked at juvenile hall later Wednesday.

Family members showed up to the scene and told us they were contacted by law enforcement who said their 17-year-old daughter had taken the plane.

In part of the video, you can hear the suspect’s father yelling in the background. He was apparently telling the teen not to resist.

The motive is still under investigation but there is no indication of any ties to domestic terrorism.

FRESNO, California (KFSN) -- A 17-year-old girl is in custody after authorities say she snuck into a small plane at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport and crashed into a chain-link fence while operating on the airfield Wednesday morning.

It happened at around 7:30 a.m. in the General Aviation area of the airport near Shields Avenue and Winery.

This section of the property sits on the west side of the airport and is used for private planes and is far removed from FYI's main commercial terminal.

Officials say the multi-million dollar King Air 200 two-engine plane took out a fence and hit the building that houses Landmark Aviation, a maintenance company.

The crash caused substantial damage to both the plane and airport property.

No one was injured.

The teen has been booked into juvenile hall.

Airport officials say the girl somehow managed to start one of the engines before taking the private plane on a short joyride.

Airport security video shows the plane making a series of pivots before crashing into a building and fence.

Officers found the girl in the pilot's seat, wearing the pilot's headset.

Officials do not believe the incident was related to domestic terrorism but say the girl appeared to be disoriented.

The suspect's mother told Action News she hadn't heard from the teen since Tuesday night.

Officials say she climbed the fence to gain access but what they're now looking into is how was she able to start the plane and get it moving.

"That's still under investigation. We're not certain how she was able to accomplish those things," said Fresno Yosemite International Airport police chief Drew Bessinger.

DESCRIPTION OF ACCIDENT:  On 12/18/19, a suspect attempted to steal the aircraft, but started only the aircraft’s left engine.

After the left engine started, the suspect lost control of the aircraft at which time the aircraft began an abrupt right turn around its right main landing gear. As the aircraft made its turn, the left wing and propeller impacted a fire hydrant then chain link fence at which time the aircraft came to a stop.

DESCRIPTION OF DAMAGES:   The damage includes, but may not be limited to:

- Left propeller (destroyed)

- Left engine (prop strike; power section of engine entirely torn off; compressor section has obvious severe fractures; engine likely destroyed or at least not economically feasible to repair)

- Left wing (deice boot destroyed; skin wrinkles throughout; inboard spar destroyed; lower wing skins torn and severely gouged; wing likely destroyed)

- Left aileron (destroyed)

- Left flap (outboard flap destroyed)

- Left nacelle (firewall buckled and torn; lower cowlings destroyed)

- Left MLG (torn from the inboard spar; needs complete overhaul or replacement)

- Fuselage (upper nose skins scraped and wrinkled; both left & right pitot tubes destroyed; empennage near aft pressure vessel twisted resulting in buckling/wrinkling of the skins and the stringers around the circumference of the empennage)

- Nose gear (turned 90 degrees past center – likely needs completed inspection or overhaul)

LOCATION OF AIRCRAFT: Fresno, CA (salvage), Ormond Beach, FL (records)

  1. "According to the girl's mother, her daughter ran away from home Tuesday night and hadn't been seen since then. The mother says her daughter has never run away before. The girl does not even know how to drive a car"

  2. I'm impressed that she got it started. I hope she observed the start limits ... I would hate to think she torched an engine ... Oh wait; never mind.

  3. On drugs? Hope she can pay for the damage.

  4. These airports need to upgrade their security cameras. You can get 4k for nearly nothing now. Let's get the technology into this century...jeez
