The helicopter pilot reported that, during the aerial application flight into rising terrain, he saw the powerline wires when the airspeed was about 40 knots. The helicopter struck the wires and rolled to the right, and subsequently descended. The helicopter touched down upright and bounced. The nose of the helicopter spun to the right and the right skid struck the ground. The helicopter rolled onto its left side and stopped.

The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the tail rotor drive system.

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.

FESSENDEN, North Dakota — A pilot suffered minor injuries after a helicopter crash south of Fessenden, North Dakota.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday they responded to a crash 4.5 miles south of Fessenden along Highway 52.

The Robinson R44 Raven II was spraying waterways by Highway 52.

When the pilot attempted to go under the powerlines the blades caught the lines.

The helicopter crashed in a field about 200 yards from the roadway.

The pilot, 49 year old, Michael Hamouz of Willowbrook, Illinois, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance as a precaution.

The Wells County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the accident.

  2. Robinson R44 = America's Deadliest Helicopters.
    The Robinson R44 led all major models with the highest fatal accident rate from 2006 to 2016... it has a long, long history of deadly crashes.

  4. The things that concerns me is that descending from a relatively low altitude I was surprised at how badly and quickly the Robinson helicopter caught on fire.
