On October 21, 2016, about 1600 eastern daylight time, an experimental Nanchang CJ-6A, N10EB, impacted terrain near Blackshear, Georgia, after a midair collision while maneuvering with another experimental Nanchang CJ-6A, N33CY. N10EB was substantially damaged and the private pilot was fatally injured. N33CY had minor damage and returned to the airport; the airline transport pilot and passenger were uninjured. N10EB was registered to and operated by the private pilot and N33CY was registered to a private individual and operated by the airline transport pilot. Both flights were being operated under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as local flights. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed for both flights, which departed from Waycross-Ware County Airport (AYS), Waycross, Georgia.

According to witnesses, the purpose of the flight was to practice formation flying with two additional Nanchang airplanes, with emphasis on splitting up and "rejoining" the four airplane formation in a "Vic" pattern. It was the third formation flight of the day. At an altitude of about 2,500 feet mean sea level (msl), the No. 1 lead airplane, N33CY, was established in a standard rate, right turn and the No. 2 airplane joined the inside of the turn and positioned to the right of the lead airplane.

The accident airplane, N10EB, was the No. 3 airplane, and it was approaching at an acute angle from the right, toward the left, in order to join the No. 3 formation spot on the outside of the turn. Airplane No. 4 followed approximately 1,000 feet behind the accident airplane. Witnesses on the other airplanes stated N10EB approached from the right, slightly below their altitude, and overshoot the approach, at which time one of the pilots heard "underrun" on the radio. Additionally, witnesses reported that N10EB flew under N33CY and appeared to pitch up before colliding.

The propeller of N33CY sliced into the horizontal stabilizer, then through the fuselage just forward of the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer of N10EB. Then the tail of N10EB separated, and the airplane entered uncontrolled flight, and impacted terrain. N33CY had minor damage and returned to AYS.

The airplanes were placed in a secured location for additional examination at a later date.

Two experimental Nanchang CJ-6A planes flying in a formation over Pierce County, Ga. Friday afternoon collided, aviation authorities say.

One person died in the plane crash.

One of the planes crashed and the other landed safely at Waycross-Ware County Airport after the 4 p.m. crash, says Kathleen Bergen, spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The pilots were the only people on the planes.

Their names and conditions have yet to be released.

The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation and Safety Board will find out what caused the crash.
