An Asia Pacific Airlines cargo plane yesterday was able to successfully make an emergency landing at the A.B. Won Pat International Airport following a distress call about the aircraft’s landing gear.
The airplane's landing gear failed to engage, said Rolenda Faasuamalie, airport marketing administrator. The airport received the distress call from Asia Pacific Airlines just before 3 p.m. At about 4:14 p.m. the aircraft decided to employ a touch-and-go-landing, according to Faasuamalie.
At about 4:16 p.m. the aircraft made a full stop on runway six. APA was operating a Boeing 727-212.
In preparation for the distressed aircraft, roadways were closed off and the airport had Airport Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (AARF) division responding to the runway. Guam Fire Department and Guam Police Department officials were also called to help the airport as an added precaution.
Once the all-clear was given, the roads were reopened.
Faasuamalie said APA departed Guam at 1:08 p.m. for a training flight without a destination.
According to APA’s flight schedule, the aircraft N86425 carrying UA/US mail Pacific Air Cargo was set to depart Guam at 1 p.m. and arrive in Pohnpei around 4:20 p.m. yesterday. The aircraft was then scheduled to depart Pohnpei at 5:20 p.m. for Chuuk.
According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the APA plane is a fixed wing multi-engine aircraft, manufactured in 1978.
FAA records show APA is registered under owner Aero Micronesia Inc., a company of Tan Holdings.
In a video of the landing, the airplane's rear wheels can be seen but the wheel under the nose of the plane used for landing did not flip down.

An Asia Pacific Airlines cargo plane landed at Guam’s international airport Friday without functioning landing gear.
Three crew members were on board, and no one was injured, according to airport spokeswoman Rolenda Faasuamalie. No fire or smoke was reported.
The aircraft took off from A.B. Won Pat International Airport at 1:08 p.m. on a “training flight,” Faasuamalie said. It was scheduled to return to the island at 3:15 p.m.
At around 2:55 p.m., the airport control tower received an alert that there was a situation on board that “may affect safe landing,” Faasuamalie said.
The plane released fuel to become lighter, and also performed a touch-and-go maneuver, which means the aircraft practiced a landing before making an actual attempt, she said. The aircraft then spent extra time in the air to expend more fuel.
The crew on board called the final approach at 4:15 p.m., and the plane landed at 4:16 p.m. she said.
The incident did not impact airport operations, Faasuamalie said. There were slight delays — by minutes — for a few flights, and the airport remained fully operational, she added.
At the scene, the airplane’s nose could be seen tilted low to the ground. Other aircraft continued to land at the airport after the cargo plane touched down.
Airport rescue and firefighting units, the Guam Police Department, and the Guam Fire Department responded to the incident. Airport police controlled traffic around the airport.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration aircraft registry, the plane was a Boeing 727 turbo-jet engine aircraft.
