Help Wanted: Air Traffic Controllers In Short Supply

WASHINGTON (December 8, 2015) A government watchdog says 13 of the nation's busiest air traffic control facilities are suffering from a shortage of air traffic controllers, a problem it says demands "urgent attention."

Matthew Hampton, a Department of Transportation assistant inspector general, told a congressional committee Tuesday the number of fully qualified controllers are "below minimum staffing requirements" at the facilities.

He didn't list all 13, but cited those in New York, Dallas, Denver and Chicago as examples.

Hampton said the facilities are also under stressed because a large share of their controllers are still being trained and are not yet competent to work on their own.

Many of their more experienced controllers are eligible to retire.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association has also complained that many of the busiest facilities are understaffed.
