CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
A maintenance issue caused a plane carrying 98 passengers and five crew members to make an emergency landing at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for American Airlines says.
No injuries were reported and the plane made a safe landing.
The plane from Raleigh-Durham International Airport was heading to Dallas Forth Worth International Airport.
American Airlines released the following statement regarding the diversion to Charlotte:
"American Airlines Flight 2428, from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport diverted to Charlotte International Airport due to an indicator light in the cockpit reporting a possible mechanical issue. The aircraft, an MD80 with 98 passengers and a crew of five, landed safely and taxied to the gate. Our maintenance team is currently evaluating the aircraft. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience, and are working to get them to DFW as soon as possible.”
Airline officials say they plan to assess the situation to decide if passengers will go back on the same plane or if a new aircraft will be used.
The airport is located on Josh Birmingham Parkway in southwest Charlotte.
