Work on the extension of a runway at Enid Woodring Regional Airport will be completed before Oct. 30, when a ribbon-cutting ceremony has been scheduled, according to a city of Enid official.
The runway is being extended 2,260 feet, increasing the runway length to 8,000 feet.
"A few navigational pieces for the runway need to be assembled and placed, but the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the runway extension is set of Oct. 30, 2015," city spokesman Steve Kime said.
The increased length will allow T-38 jets from Vance Air Force Base to land at Woodring, he said.
"The T-38 requires a higher approach and take-off speed, thus the need for (a) longer runway," Kime said. "Vance will be undertaking some runway improvements and repairs in the near future; therefore, with the extension at Woodring, jets from Vance will continue training flights and landing of USAF aircraft."
Kime said the extension also will allow for the airport to be a landing place when needed, or for during inclement weather, "even for smaller commercial jets."
There have been multiple sources of funding for the project with a price tag of just under $9 million, including $2.5 million from Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, $2 million from Federal Aviation Administration, $800,000 from Oklahoma Strategic Planning Commission and $500,000 from Oklahoma Department of Transportation, he said.
Work on the project first began in December 2013, when Southgate Road had to be moved for the extension, and work on the runway began in October 2014, Kime said.
