Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee, N94MC, Sky-Signs LLC: Accident occurred June 27, 2015 near Scholes International Airport (KGLS), Galveston, Texas

GALVESTON – A man who witnessed a plane crash in Galveston said the pilot was lucky to be alive.

Gary Harden said he watched the plane as it ascended over Galveston with a large advertising banner and noticed quickly that something wasn't right. Harden said he watched as the pilot dropped the banner and he then heard the plane's engine cut off.

Harden said the pilot hadn't gone more than a mile from where he took off before he cut off the banner.

"It happened pretty fast," he said.

The plane crashed in a cow pasture off Stewart Road in between 7 Mile Road and 7 ½ Mile Road, according to Harden.

Harden said he initially thought the pilot was going to land in a nearby bay. One of the plane's wings clipped a horse corral on its way down, Harden said.

A police sergeant immediately responded to the scene, Harden said. The pilot was shaken up, according to Harden, but didn't suffer any major injuries other than a sore back.

A video Harden shot of the scene shows the alleged pilot standing next to the plane with a medic.

"He's lucky," Harden said.
