FLORHAM PARK – An airplane trailing a banner that read “FIRE JOHN IDZIK” circled the Jets’ training complex for about 20 minutes Wednesday as the team practiced.
General manager John Idzik and owner Woody Johnson were in attendance
at practice while the plane circled, though it is not clear if they
noticed it. The plane flew over the Jets' facility during most of the
30-minute period that practice was open to reporters, ensuring maximum
visibility.
This bizarre moment was just the latest chapter in the Jets’
miserable 1-8 season. On Sunday against the Steelers, they will try to
avoid losing nine straight games in a single season for the first time ever.
Jets fans angry about Idzik’s job performance in his season-plus as general manager announced Tuesday on a website they created, FireJohnIdzik.com, that they had raised enough money to purchase three billboards near MetLife Stadium bearing that message.
The ire aimed at Idzik only increased after his recent, rambling press conference.
Coach Rex Ryan is almost certainly on his way out after this season,
his sixth with the Jets. But will Johnson also decide to dismiss Idzik?
Or will the owner choose to continue down the path with his patient
general manager’s plan?
The fans who created the website urging Johnson to fire Idzik said on
their Twitter account Wednesday that they were not responsible for the
airplane banner.
