Hangar rental to EagleMed temporarily grounded: McAlester Regional Airport (KMLC), Oklahoma

Plans for the city of McAlester to rent an airport hangar to EagleMed LLC failed to take flight Tuesday night after City Manager Pete Stasiak pulled the item from the McAlester City Council meeting agenda.

An agenda item had called for the city council to discuss and possibly take action on an agenda item authorizing the mayor to sign a lease agreement with EagleMed for use of a city hangar at McAlester Regional Airport.

The agreement would be between McAlester Regional Airport and the city of McAlester, and EagleMed, LLC, for Corporate Hangar No. 30 at the airport. Tentative terms in the proposed five-year contract called for EagleMed to pay the city $1,700 a month for use of the hangar, with the contract set to extend for five years, from Oct. 1, 2012, to Oct. 1, 2017.

However, as soon as the item regarding the hangar came up during the regular Tuesday night meeting of the city council, Stasiak announced he needed to pull the item.

“I’ve been working closely with Mr. Bugg,” Stasiak said, referring to EagleMed President Larry Bugg, of Wichita, Kan.

“He would like for his attorney to work with Mr. Ervin on the proposed contract,” Stasiak said, this time referring to McAlester City Attorney Joe Ervin.

“We will get that back to you,” said Stasiak.

EagleMed considers use of a hangar at McAlester Regional Airport crucial to plans to place a “fixed wing aircraft,” or airplane, in McAlester, according to statements Bugg made during a recent visit to McAlester . A medical airplane would be in addition to plans to keep a medical helicopter stationed on the landing pad a McAlester Regional Health Center.

The McAlester Regional Health Center Authority board voted in August to authorize hospital Chief Executive Officer David Keith to negotiate and finalize an agreement with EagleMed to provide the hospital with a medical flight service, which has been provided by the AirEvac Lifeteam.

When meeting with the MRHC Authority board in August, Bugg spoke of the possibility of keeping a “fixed-wing aircraft” in McAlester. Bugg said it hinged on several factors, including the availability of an airport hangar.
