Air Ops at San Bernardino Tanker Base in support of the Wildfire outbreak in San Diego County.
The San Bernardino International Airport (SBIA) saw an increase of aviation activity this past weekend as the airport helped in air support for fire fighting efforts against the San Diego fires and an air show in Redlands.
Mark Gibbs, SBIA deputy director of aviation, said that while air traffic ebbs and flows at the airport according to the pilots' activities this past weekend was a busy streak.
The U.S. Forest Service operates a fire fighting tanker base at the airport which had about eight planes flying in and out during the fire fighting efforts in San Diego with the busiest days on Thursday and Friday, Gibbs estimated.
The airport was also supporting about a dozen planes for the Hanger 24 Air Fest in Redlands on Friday and Saturday.
Gibbs also explained that while the Forest Service tankers were flying their usual patterns the air show planes were a different animal as they are likely to be flying at unusual altitudes for longer periods of time which may have been noticed by Highland residents.
Attendees of the fifth annual Community Action Partnership Gala and Art show got an up-close view of the activity as the event was held in the SBIA terminal on Friday evening.
