BEDFORD (CBS) – About thirty ambulances were put on standby at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford Saturday afternoon for a potential emergency involving an incoming Air Force plane.

Lt. Col. James Bishop, the Chief of Public Affairs at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, told WBZ-TV a C-5 B military transport plane traveling from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany was heading to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware when there was a loss of cabin pressure over the Atlantic Ocean around 11 a.m.

The plane was flying at 34,000 feet at the time.

Bishop said there was no in-flight emergency and no injuries were reported.

But a decision was made to land the plane in New England.  Hanscom, Westover and Pease Air National Guard Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire were put on alert as a precaution.

The plane landed safely at Westover just after 2 p.m.

There were a total of 25 people on board the aircraft – 15 passengers and 10 crew members.

No other information is available at this point in the investigation.

“A C-5 B assigned to Westover Air Reserve Base was returning from overseas en route to Dover Air Force Base at 34,000 feet with 25 crew and passengers when the aircraft experienced a loss of pressurization shortly after 11 a.m. while over the Atlantic Ocean,” a statement from the base said. “As a precaution, the aircraft was diverted to Westover Air Reserve Base for maintenance actions. Officials at Hanscom Air Force Base were notified a C-5 Galaxy aircraft flying in from Ramstein Air Base may need to make an emergency landing at the site, said spokesman Chuck Paone. He told the Herald the transport plane was supposed to land in Westover Air Reserve Base in western Massachusetts at around 2 p.m. but could divert to Hanscom or Aease Air National Guard Base in New Hampshire.

At Hanscom, dozens of emergency vehicles fied up to await the landing before word came that the plane would be continuing on to Westover.
