The airport board is considering changing its rental agreement for Jedediah’s at the Airport.
Jedediah’s
co-owner Mike Gierau asked the board Oct. 9 to lower their monthly rent
as Jedediah’s starts its second year at Yellowstone Regional Airport.
Gierau
told the board the request did not come easy, but needed to be made
after estimating the business lost $17,000 in its first year at YRA.
“This
is not a request we want to make,” he added. “We started the restaurant
in October 2012 and we’ve worked hard in the last year to be the
amentity you hoped we would be. We feel a part of the community here and
have worked hard to make ends meet. We want to stay, but we have lost
money.”
According to the contract, Jedediah’s paid $250 per month for its first six months and $500 monthly for the next six months.
Starting its second year of operation this month, the monthly rent went up to $1,000.
When
Jedediah’s at the Airport opened last October it joined a group of the
company’s eateries – which include the original Jedediah’s House of
Sourdough in downtown Jackson, and cafes at the airports in Jackson and
Missoula, Mont.
Before the airport board meeting Nov. 20, the
board asked Gierau and airport manager Bob Hooper to explore options for
more signage at the airport advertising the restaurant.
The
board also suggested talking to an attorney about the options for
providing assistance to a private business, given that the airport
receives public funds.
When asked what Jedediah’s would do if the airport can’t help, Gierau says the company “would have decisions to make.”
“But Jedediah’s is happy to be in Cody and we want it to work,” he added. “That’s why we’re here.”
In other matters, YRA experienced a 2.6 percent increase in August enplanements from last year.
In
August, United Express had 1,940 enplanements and Delta Connection had
2,003 enplanements, up from 1,924 and 1,918, respectively, in August
2012.
So far for 2013, YRA has seen 24,161 enplanements.
