HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Pacific Wings, serving five Hawaii destinations with a single Cessna 208 Grand Caravan, will be shutting down in mid-June.
The airline website Sunday night showed no seats available beyond June, and the reservations operator confirmed operations would cease. She said the shutdown would not affect Pacific Wings regional operations on the mainland.
Descended from a Grand Canyon tour operation in the 1970s, Pacific Wings at one time had a small fleet of Cessnas but downsized in recent years. Through much of its history it has served smaller markets like Molokai, Kalaupapa, Lanai, Hana and Waimea-Kamuela. Often criticized for high fares and frequent cancellations, Pacific Wings nonetheless was an essential link to some of Hawaii's more remote locales.
With Island Air renewing its fleet with larger turboprops that cannot land on shorter runaways such as the one at Kapalua on West Maui, the shutdown of Pacific Wings will effectively leave Mokulele Airlines as the only scheduled airline with planes small enough to serve some Hawaii airports.
