Pilots finally have traffic guidance at Hernando County Airport (KBKV), Brooksville, Florida

HERNANDO COUNTY --

Until recently, pilots have pretty much been on their own when they take off or land at the Hernando County Airport. Now, they have eyes in the sky.

A new air traffic control tower has opened at the Hernando County Airport, and it has a full-time crew.

Five air traffic controllers and a manager are on the job. They have a combined 194 years of experience.

Don Silvernell, the airport's manager, says the airport is getting busier each year and the tower will keep things safe.

"It's the mixed traffic," he said. "You have somebody at 20 knots and somebody else at 120 knots. It is a very rapid closure rate.

"Everybody coming in and out is supposed to be talking to the tower."

For the first time, air space around the airport is considered controlled. The air traffic controllers will be on the job seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Airport leaders are hoping the addition of the tower will attract more business to the airport's industrial park. The airport was used during World War II and can handle large jets.
