An Amazing Tail . . .

 
 
1st hand report 1964 B-52H losses 83 percent of stabilizer (tail) film

Friday, 10 January 1964, USAF B-52H (S/N 61-023) took-off from Wichita, Kansas on a structural flight test mission. 
 

The all-Boeing air crew consisted of instructor pilot Charles Fisher, pilot Richard Curry, co-pilot Leo Coors, and navigator James Pittman.

B-52H on loan to Boeing Test Flight at 1:17 the Captain of the flight is introduced (Dick) Richard Curry of Boeing . . .

Wind 62 knots, airspeed 345 knots and increasing speed hit by 9 seconds of turbulence snapped 83 percent of tail snapped off . . .

Crew was told to abandon the aircraft but they choose to continue with marginal control at 4:24 film begins of the B-52H in flight . . .


6:37 on final approach . . . flew for 5 hours without it's stabilizer.
