Wisconsin Gov. Walker at Superior airport for jobs announcement

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will be in Superior at 9:30 a.m. today to announce “a major job expansion,” according to a news release issued Sunday.

While details of the announcement remain scant, the airport location of the news conference suggests Walker may share news of a pending deal with Kestrel Aircraft.

On Jan. 10, the Douglas County Land and Development Committee unanimously voted to recommend the transfer of 13.3 acres of land near the Richard I. Bong Memorial Airport to the Superior Redevelopment Authority to help Kestrel establish operations in the city. The Douglas County Board will weigh in on the proposed $500,000 deal this Thursday.

Kestrel reportedly is eyeing the site to accommodate a 50,000-square-foot assembly plant. If the start-up airplane company’s prospective development plan is realized, the plant would be the second of two facilities to be built in Superior.

Kestrel’s first facility would be a 35,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in the Winter Street Industrial Park. That plant could be operational by the end of this year.

If Superior is successful in landing Kestrel, the company forecasts it could create 600 new jobs by 2016.

Kestrel is headed by Alan Klapmeier, co-founder and former CEO of Cirrus Aircraft, based in Duluth.
