WWII: Then and Now: Bomber pilot flew 35 missions

.
“We hit Berlin twice.”

Delbert C. “Del” Rohr of Canal Fulton was identifying the target of two missions among the 35 B-17 bomber missions he flew over Germany during World War II. The missions were immediate and frequent once he reached his Army Air Force base in England.

“I was probably only over there 31⁄2 months.”

Rohr, who was born in Jackson Township, was drafted in 1942 and went to radio and gunnery school, becoming a sergeant. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant after he finished flight school and flew his B-17 overseas.

“We were based about 50 miles north of London,” he said. “We got there Jan. 1, 1945.”
