Antigua: More Holes Develop On Airport Runway. VC Bird International Airport.

Antigua St John's - Officials at the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority are at their wits' end to determine the cause of some large potholes that have opened up at critical parts of the runway at VC Bird International Airport over the last several weeks.

The latest incident happened on Friday when the airport was closed briefly while the maintenance crew patched another hole. It was the second such incident in a week, and the third overall.

Acting CEO at the airport, Gatesworth James, said Friday’s closure was brief, and did not result in the cancellation of any flights.

“A few of LIAT’s flights were delayed, and none of the flights by the larger international aircraft were affected,” he said.

James said however that authorities are not "sitting with their hands in their laps," as they were working feverishly to determine the cause of the holes and arrive at suitable remedial actions to eliminate the problem altogether.

He was tightlipped about the steps that have been planned or are already in place to determine the cause of the problem.

The Antigua & Barbuda government spent over $100 M on upgrading and expanding the runway, with work completed just two years ago.
