TUPELO, Mississippi • Emergency crews responded to a plane crash at the Tupelo Regional Airport on Monday evening.

According to Tupelo Police spokesman Major Charles "Chuck" McDougald, preliminary information is that a small plane "ran off a runway or taxiway." There were no injuries reported.

Fire Chief Kelly Elliot said the plane was landing when it crashed.

"Appears the guy may have forgot to put his landing gear down. He is appears to be OK but is getting checked out," Elliot said.

Emergency crews could be seen spraying the plane at approximately 5 p.m.

According to FAA registration information, the plane is a Beech 36 Bonanza owned by Shimkus Aviation, LLC, out of Leland. Wayne Anthony Shimkus and Keron Jean Shimkus are listed as the owners of the aviation company. As of 6 p.m. Monday night, the pilot's name had not been made public.

The incident comes two days after a Shannon man stole a plane from the airport and threatened to crash it into the West Main Street Walmart. After four-and-a-half hours, the suspect, Cory Patterson, crash landed the plane in a field in rural Tippah County. No one was injured in the incident.

Patterson faces state charges of grand larceny and making terrorist threats. The FBI is considering federal charges. A judge denied bond for Patterson on Sunday.

    1. Yes, I am watching this show right now. (Ransom for a Dead Man) Wife is a pilot/Lawyer and shoots her husband with a .22 and comes up with a kidnapping plot. She asked Colombo to go flying and he takes her up on it even though he has a fear of flying to take the opportunity to question her. The A36 is shown doing a roll with Columbo in the right seat and he says do not do that again. She eggs him to try flying and actually flips the controls over to him and the airplane suddenly is all the sky! He almost loses his footing when he gets out of the plane and plants himself firmly on the ground.

  6. The same plane was also used in Banacek series Episode ( A million the hard way) Margot Kidder played the pilot (she played Louis Lane in superman movies.

  7. Also the same from "Ironside" episode 'Riddle at 24,000'.

  8. The pilot initially landed gear up then tried to extend the landing gear which failed to fully extend.

  9. Ironic that in the Banacek episode Margot Kidder almost lands gear up at KLAS but the warning horn alerts her and she executes a go around, landing successfully after extending gear manually. Too bad this pilot didn't heed the horn (no relation to 'fear the fork").

  10. Ha! Just watching my beloved Colimbo right now and googled the N number of this plane. Too bad it got damaged! Nice plane.. So I wonder the back story on who owned the plane and how it saw it's way into multiple television shows. Wonder what the common denominator was? Owned by the same studio exec or what?
