The Cessna 172N Skyhawk was flying “extremely low” while approaching Terminal Island, drawing the attention of Los Angeles Port Police officers.
The officers lost sight of the plane but eventually tracked it to an abandoned industrial site just south of Ocean Boulevard east of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, where it had successfully completed an emergency landing on the patch of dirt.
“They had apparently just been conducting some training maneuvers in this area and they lost the engine, so they did an emergency landing,” Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.
The plane remained in the empty lot until it was towed away on Monday morning.
I saw this partially disassembled aircraft being hauled on a flat-bed truck on EB 10 near Palm Springs today. Something you don't see every day!
