Today at 12:25pm Ingham County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Jewett Airport in Mason after the report of an airplane that landed without the landing gear deployed.

The Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche landed safely on its belly. The pilot, a 60-year old man from Lansing, was the only occupant and said the landing gear failed to deploy.

The pilot was not injured, but the plane suffered damage to its underside and both props. Airport Police from Lansing responded and the FAA was notified.

The reason the "landing gear failed to deploy" is because the pilot didn't put the wheels down. You've gotta reach over and find that switch in the shape of wheel and flick it down. Down come the wheels.

  2. My PA30 had a green down light and a mirror on the cowling to see the nose wheel...of course you had to be with it enough to look at those obvious cues before landing...and if the gear wasn't down there was a very reliable emergency extension technique detailed in the POH which I used one dark and stormy night. A shame to see a classic crunched like that.
