IREDELL COUNTY, North Carolina — A person was hurt after a small plane crashed into Lake Norman Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the Aviat A-1B Husky crashed three miles northwest of Lake Norman Airpark near Davidson.
The pilot was the only person on board and taken to a local hospital for their injuries, according to officials. Their condition has not been released.
A Channel 9 crew at the scene could see the plane overturned.
The FAA is investigating the crash.
Tough day at the lake. Investigation will notice the extended gear visible in photo. Maybe there will someday be an option to set "amphibian mode" in glass cockpits or ipad flight displays such that a water landing retract gear verification warning is issued before touching the lake, based on mapping.
ReplyDeletePassengers on amphibs with retractable gear should be aware of the flip and drowning risk if checklist is not strictly followed for water landings.
Ah yes. Winter weather has reduced the KR reports of gear down float plane water landing flips. Well I guess we are headed to springs again lol. It never ceases to amaze me how often this happens. One would think one would use a checklist on an amphib that operates between land and water for operations. The interesting thing is that you rarely see a report of a gear up amphib landing on land. It is almost always gear down on water landing accident. Hmmmmm....wonder why that is.
