On April 25, 2019, at 1358 eastern daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Super Acro Sport I, N20FB, was substantially damaged when it collided with trees and terrain during a forced landing near Elberton, Georgia. The airline transport pilot was seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the personal flight which was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The airplane departed Saluda County Airport (6J4), Saluda, South Carolina at 1139 and was destined for Elberton County Airport (EBA), Elberton, Georgia.
According to the previous owner, he had just sold the airplane to the pilot. The main fuel tank was filled with fuel, and the auxiliary tank contained no fuel as he "never used it." The pilot stated that he would taxi the airplane and if it felt "good" he would take off and fly. The pilot departed at 1139 and did not return. The previous owner attempted to contact him by telephone and was unsuccessful.
When sheriff's deputies responded to the scene, the pilot reported that "his fuel quit working so he tried to prime it for his backup fuel to work." When the restoration of engine power was unsuccessful, the airplane was "too low" and the pilot said he prepared for an emergency landing and then struck trees. The airplane came to rest in trees 4 miles northwest of EBA.
The pilot held an airline transport pilot certificate with ratings for airplane single and multiengine land with multiple type ratings. His Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) basic medical certification was dated February 16, 2019. He reported 20,000 total hours of flight experience on that date.
According to FAA records, the airplane was manufactured in 1995. It was a one-place, bi-wing, tail-wheel equipped airplane of wood and fabric construction. It was powered by a Lycoming O-320-D3G engine. The main fuel tank had a capacity of 17.5 gallons, and according to the previous owner, the average fuel consumption rate for the airplane was 8.5 gallons per hour.
The previous owner stated that the most recent condition inspection was completed near the beginning of 2018 and that the engine "had 10 hours on it." The tachometer displayed 1,196.3 hours at the accident site.
The wreckage was placed upright by first responders and was photographed by an FAA inspector as it rested on all three landing gear. There was no odor of fuel and no evidence of fuel spillage at the scene. The airplane was largely intact except for the right wing which was destroyed by impact. Both fuel tanks were intact and neither contained fuel.
At 1415, the weather recorded at EBA, 4 miles southeast of the accident site included clear skies and calm winds. Visibility was 10 statute miles, the temperature was 24°C, and the dew point was 17°C. The altimeter setting was 29.93 inches of mercury.

An 82-year-old Hartwell man was injured when his small plane went down in a wooded area in Northeast Georgia's Elbert County Thursday afternoon.
The plane went down just before 2 p.m. near Brewers Bridge Road near the intersection of Kathwood Drive Extension, according to information provided by WSGC Radio in Elberton.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was a Super Acro Sport I.
The pilot was identified as Joe Milford Hunt. Hunt was transported from the crash site to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment.
WSGC reporters said federal officials remained on the scene of the crash late into Thursday evening.
A number of agencies have participated in the several stages of the investigation including the FAA, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, the Elberton Police Department, the Elbert County Fire Department, EMA and EMS. The National Transportation Safety Board will make a determination on the probable cause of the crash.

According to the FAA, a Super Acro Sport 1 aircraft crashed into trees north of Brewers Bridge Road just outside of Elberton, Georgia.
The crash was reported around 2:40 p.m.
The pilot was the only person on board. At the time of the crash authorities on scene confirmed the pilot was injured and taken to a hospital in Athens, GA. At this time the condition of the victim is unknown.
Elbert County Emergency Management says the pilot, from Hartwell, bought the plane a few weeks ago and picked it up Thursday from a company in Saluda, SC.
The FAA said they'll release the aircraft registration when possible.
An investigation is underway by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the probably cause of the crash.

The 82-year-old pilot was taken by EMS to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, according to WSGA Radio.
The Federal Aviation Administration, Elbert County Sheriff's Office, Elberton Police Department, Elbert County Fire Department, Elbert County Emergency Management Agency and EMS will continue to investigate the crash.

He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, the radio station said.
He was moving while waiting for an ambulance and was taken from the crash site in a four-wheeler since the crash happened back in the woods, far from the road.
