SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — One person has died after a private helicopter crashed on a beach along Puerto Rico’s north coast.

Police said the accident occurred Saturday afternoon in the town of Rio Grande just east of the capital of San Juan. Authorities identified the victim as 53-year-old Carlos Virelles Jimenez.

They said three other people who were aboard the JetRanger helicopter are being treated for injuries.

Police said they do not know what caused the crash. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

Un accidente aéreo fue reportado esta tarde en el área de la playa Las Picúas, en Río Grande.

Agentes adscritos al cuartel de Distrito de Río Grande se encuentran en el lugar.

Al llegar las autoridades al lugar se encontró un helicóptero Jet Ranger Bell el cual se había accidentado con cuatro tripulantes identificados como: Verónica Gonzalez Cotto, de 24 años, Raúl Martinez Cruz, de 53 años, Raúl Martinez Fernández, de 23 años y Carlos Virelles Jiménez, de 53 años, este último falleció por los traumas recibidos.

Las otras tres personas fueron transportadas en condición estable por personal de Emergencias Médicas al Hospital Dr. Federico Trilla en Carolina.

Al momento se desconoce las causas de la colisión.
