WASHINGTON—A U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane was forced to take evasive action to avoid a possible mid-air collision after a Chinese jet fighter came within 300 feet of the American aircraft over the East China Sea, U.S. officials said Monday.

Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said a Chinese J-10 jet fighter rapidly approached under the U.S. EP-3 reconnaissance plane, slowed down and then flew in front of the American pilot, triggering the plane’s collision alarm system and forcing it to take evasive action.

The Chinese plane came within 300 feet of the U.S. plane, which was flying in international airspace, according to another defense official.

Capt. Davis said the incident was “uncharacteristic” of the Chinese military, calling it an exception, not the rule, for interactions between pilots in the area.

The incident is the latest in series of incidents between the U.S. and Chinese militaries as tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula.

In May, Chinese planes were involved in two similar incidents criticized by the Pentagon.

  1. The communist Chinese are trying to pick a fight with the US as well as dominate all of the far east. They could step on Kim Jong-il and squash him like a bug in a matter of seconds but refuse to do it to continue to antagonize the west.

Censorship and imprisonment is the name of the day in mainland China.

Face it people, time to back every nation there, especially Japan.

If it says made in China, give it a pass in the marketplace.

  2. Unacceptable in international airspace for one country to harass another. The Chinese will learn one way or another Obama ain't in charge no more.

  3. I was in Nepal when a ChiCom fighter attempted fly up between the port engines on one of our P-3s. He missed and drifted into the inboard prop, shearing the nose off, killing the pilot. A P-3 is a big, 4-engine, slow-moving, lumbering propeller aircraft. Looks like an old bomber. It's not maneuverable, like a fighter aircraft.

They were over 300 miles out in international airspace. Other ChiCom jets ordered the stricken P-3 to Hianan Island where they were forced to land. They almost didn't make it.

The ChiComs demanded an apology from President Bush. He compromised, expressing regret that the Chinese pilot died. They finally let the crew go but kept the plane. The crew ditched what they could on the way in.

CNN Asia (English speaking) reported it was a flagrant violation of Communist China's sovereignty and air space. It was my first experience with CNN outside the U.S. You wouldn't believe how anti-America they were back then outside the U.S.

    You do now.
