NTSB investigators used data provided by various entities, including, but not limited to, the Federal Aviation Administration and/or the operator and did not travel in support of this investigation to prepare this aircraft accident report.
The pilot reported that, during the landing as the tailwheel began to settle, a “massive and unexpected gust of wind” lifted the left wing. He immediately attempted to recover by adding rudder inputs; however, the wind shifted to a “quartering tailwind,” and the rear of the airplane whipped rapidly to the right. He applied the brakes as the airplane encountered a downhill slope on the left side of the runway, and it then came to rest inverted.
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the empennage.
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
The automated weather observation system located on the airport reported that, about the time of the accident, the wind was from 360° at 12 knots, gusting to 17 knots. The pilot landed on runway 35L.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll in gusting wind conditions.

HENDERSON, Nev. - A small Cessna plane flipped on its side after landing at the Henderson Executive Airport Friday afternoon, Henderson Fire officials said.
There were two people on the plane who were able to get out of the plane by themselves.
One person suffered a minor wrist injury, but declined being transported to the hospital.

Had just done a tour helicopter flight and watched that plane landing. It was NUTS, it was on the ground already and a looked like wind tossed it around like a rag doll. It looked like the people inside got out and walked away. Crazy site!!
ReplyDeleteI was on that helicopter flight and we were watching this little airplane land. It was a smooth landing and everything looked so nice. The wind got so crazy and seemed like it lifted the plane from the ground like it was nothing. Thank god after everything was finished we saw two people get out and walk away. Never seen anything like that.
