Flight Conducted Under:  Part 91: General Aviation - Instructional

On August 24, 2016, about 1800 pacific daylight time, a Siai-Marchetti SF260 airplane, N16FD, sustained substantial damage following a loss of control during takeoff at the Fullerton Municipal Airport (FUL), Fullerton, CA. The flight was being operated by Air Combat USA, Fullerton, as an aerobatic training flight under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The airline transport rated pilot and one passenger received minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and no FAA flight plan was on file.

The pilot reported that the preflight, taxi, and initial takeoff roll were all normal. During the initial takeoff, just after rotation, the airplane began rolling left. The pilot attempted to correct for the roll by adding full right aileron and rudder, but the airplane continued to the left and impacted the ground off the left side of the runway. After the airplane impacted the ground, it continued to travel across a flight school ramp, hitting four parked airplanes, and a hangar before coming to rest. A small post-crash fire was quickly extinguished by airport personnel.

The airplane was recovered to a secure location, and examination of the airframe and engine are pending.

A single-engine plane crashed at an airport on Wednesday leaving two people injured, according to the Fullerton Police Department.

The Fullerton Fire Department received a call around 5:59 p.m. of a small plane down at Fullerton Airport at 4011 W. Commonwealth Avenue.

The plane, Siai-Marchetti SF260, lost control while taking off, veered across the runway, struck three parked airplanes and crashed into a hangar, according to a City of Fullerton press release.

Two people were on board the plane, owned by Air Combat USA, and sustained minor injuries. The pilot was on a routine flight, officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the incident.

Federal authorities Thursday began figuring out why an aircraft veered out of control during a take-off attempt at  Fullerton Municipal Airport and crashed into a hangar.

The two people aboard sustained only minor injuries.

Tower personnel at the airport, which is located at 4011 W. Commonwealth Ave., notified emergency personnel of the crash, according to a Metro Cities Fire Authority dispatcher.

“The pilot of a Siai-Marchetti SF260, tail number N16FD, lost control while taking off and crashed into a hangar,” Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Two people were aboard and sustained minor injuries, Gregor said.

There was no fire and no one was taken to a hospital in the 6 p.m. Wednesday crash, the dispatcher said.

The plane bore World War II combat aircraft markings, including “Air Combat – USA” on the tail and an old U.S. Air Force insignia on the fuselage.

It is registered to an address in Portland, Oregon, according to the FAA, which will investigate the crash.

  1. I was there, my comments to the response, the causal human factors, physical and mechanical inspection of the post crash aircraft is restricted to those I am accountable to ..

I can say that those who gave the trustee hell over the year before the accident should be held accountable ,From the Mistress, Airport Manager, the Uncle.. the pilots maintenance supervisor and staff who abandoned their duties of aviation safety..not to leave out the aviation community of Fullerton airport to allow a corrosive toxic and abusive atmosphere to be created ,,the same one that exists today..

  2. Who in the aviation community of Fullerton was responsible for this crash?

Who and what specifically kind of corrosive toxic and abusive atmosphere was allowed to be created by them and how exactly did they do so?

  3. So.......... What you're saying is that everyone mentioned EXCEPT the pilot is responsible for the crash? I think arrogance and piss poor piloting was the culprit, but hey, that's just my opinion. There is a good reason why this company is long gone from Fullerton
