NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — A 38-year-old Norwich man has been arrested after police say he was trying to prevent a LifeStar Helicopter from taking off.

On Friday afternoon, New London Police Emergency Dispatch received a call from the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Security Department saying a male was interfering with a LifeStar Helicopter’s attempt to takeoff from the heliport.

Police say 38-year-old Jonathan Brand of Norwich was warned several times to leave the cordoned off area, but he refused and continued to delay the pilot’s takeoff. Police say there was a patient on board the helicopter being transferred to another facility.

Brand eventually removed himself from the area, but according to police, then stood in the middle of the hospital parking lot and blocked cars from leaving the property.

Officers got to the scene, interviewed witnesses, and found and arrested Brand. He is charged with interfering with a heliport-landing field, reckless endangerment, first-degree trespassing, and breach of peace. He is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond.
