Piper PA-32-300, Ever Success Auto Ltd/Excel Bond Leisure Air Sdn Bhd, 9M-AVN: Accident occurred November 15, 2015 near Teluk Dalam beach, Kampung Tersusun, Pulau Pangkor, Malaysia

LUMUT: A driver and his passengers had a close shave with death as a Piper 32 light aircraft crashed into the sea near Teluk Dalam at Pangkor Island.

The man, who only wanted to be known as Katan, in his 50s, said he was driving a van full of tourists on a sightseeing tour of the area when the aircraft zoomed dangerously in front of his vehicle.

“Had I driven a few seconds faster, the aircraft would have crashed into my van.

“The tourists in the van screamed their lungs out after seeing the aircraft flying close to us.

“We were very lucky,” he said yesterday.

The light aircraft crashed into the sea at about 1.25pm yesterday with four people onboard – two Singaporean men, a Malaysian man and a woman from China.

Met at the Pangkor health clinic, medical officer Dr Talib Salleh said all four were only slightly injured and had received outpatient treatment.

He said the pilot, Tan Les Lie, 66, from Singapore, injured his lower lip while co-pilot Khoo Lam Thean, 76, from Ipoh, his left hand and right leg.

Two other passengers, Yip Kin Long, 51, from Singapore, and his wife Liang Jiao, 27, suffered pain on their shoulder and back.

“There are no signs of concussion or serious injuries.

“They were standing on the beach after being rescued by people in the area,” he said.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Tengku Mohd Zailan Tengku Ahmad said the aircraft was registered in Thailand under Ever Success Auto Ltd.

ACP Tengku Zailan said the aircraft had just taken off from the Pangkor airstrip at about 1.20pm and was heading towards Subang when its engine failed.

“Its engine had some failure, forcing the pilot to abort and land the aircraft,” said ACP Tengku Zailan.

The plane, he added, was later dragged to shore with a cable pulled by a bulldozer.

The case, he said, had been handed over to the Civil Aviation Department.

LUMUT, Nov 15 — A privately-owned aircraft plunged into the sea while trying to make an emergency landing about 100 metres from Teluk Dalam beach in Kampung Tersusun, Pulau Pangkor here today.

Manjung District Police chief ACP Tengku Mohd Zailan Tengku Ahmad Shah said the aircraft had to make an emergency landing after the pilot realized that the aircraft’s tail had broken and stuck on the fence of the short take off and landing (STOL) runway near the beach during the takeoff.

The aircraft took off from the STOL airport at 1.30pm and was heading to Subang airport when the mishap occurred, he said.

The aircraft, which was owned by Ever Success Auto (Thailand) Ltd, was manned by a Singaporean pilot and a local 76-year-old co-pilot, and was carrying two passengers, a 27-year-old Chinese woman and a 51-year-old Singaporean man.

All of them escaped with no major injuries, but were taken to Pulau Pangkor Health Clinic for further examination, Tengku Mohd Zailan told reporters at the scene.

He said the victims, who were on the island for a holiday, were rescued by the local residents who witnessed the incident.

“The remains of the aircraft had also been pulled from the sea using fire engine and upon approval from the Civil Aviation Department,” he said.

Meanwhile, eyewitness Azhar Shahadan said he was shocked to see an aircraft in the sea with the propeller blades still spinning.

Azhar, 46, said he and his friend, Roslan Bakar in his 40s, was riding a motorcycle along the beach when they heard the noise like something big had plunged into the sea.

“The next thing we saw was a plane in the water and a woman trying to get out of the plane and swimming to safety.

“Roslan, who is a good swimmer, quickly dived and helped rescue three other victims who were trapped in the aircraft while I called the ambulance,” he said, adding that the incident reminded him of a similar incident which occurred 16 years ago.

Another eyewitness, Osman Bakar, 39, said he was fishing in the area when he heard the loud bang from the sea.

“I kind of knew that the noise was from an aircraft as the airport was located so close to the beach.

“When I saw it, the aircraft was in the sea, with its wheels facing the sky,” said Osman who also joined Roslan in helping the victims.
