OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man was rescued by Coast Guard aircrews after his plane crashed approximately five miles east of South Bimini, Bahamas, Monday afternoon.

According to officials, watchstanders in Miami received a report around 1:50 p.m. from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center of an activated emergency locator transmitter from an overdue Cessna 172  believed to be traveling from the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

The plane, flown by 43-year-old David Pedroda, was reportedly last seen on radar descending east of South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas. "I swim maybe three miles with the life jacket. If I didn't have that, I couldn't survive swimming that long," he said in an interview with the Coast Guard.

After dispatching an airplane crew from Clearwater, the downed aircraft and pilot, 43-year-old David Pedrosa, were found in the water. A helicopter crew was then able to safely rescue the pilot, where he was taken to Air Station Miami, two hours after the first report was received, in stable condition.

"The helicopter came straight to me, made a turn and they saw me and I'm here now," said Pedrosa. "I just want to say thank you for the Coast Guard to save me. I'm here because of them. They rescued me."

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
