Commercial air service was down almost 4 hours Friday at the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport (KAZO)

KALAMAZOO, MI – If you had trouble flying into or out of the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport on Friday evening, airport personnel were just following procedure.

Commercial jets that use the airport's main runway were unable to use it from 7:15 p.m. until about 11 p.m. Friday after a single-engine airplane had trouble with its landing gear.

"It landed fine but as it was taxiing on the runway and off, the gear failed and it came down on its belly," Airport Director David Reid said of a Cessna 210 that landed at about 7:15 p.m. Friday.

The plane was damaged but the pilot, who was alone aboard the aircraft, was not injured, Reid said.

The plane came to a halt on a taxiway that leads off of the airport's main, 6,502-foot runway.

Although emergency and maintenance crews were available to remove the plane, authorization is first required from the Federal Aviation Administration, Reid said. The FAA has to conduct an investigation, he said.

"We can't just move it," he said. "Our crews were on site but we had to contact the FAA and await their authorization to move it."

After some communication, the FAA received information from the airport and authorized the plane's removal. It planned to investigate later.
